Interior/Exterior Concrete Instructions for Stained Concrete

We encourage a smooth hard, machine troweled finish for interior surfaces. It is important the concrete be thoughtly finished with hand tools around floor outlets, plumbing, or any areas not accessible to the machine. Avoid using Red or yellow chalks, which can consist of permanent dyes, affecting the outcome of the final project. Do not leave wood, framing material or other building material laying on the concrete as this can alter the moisture content in the slab and leave permanent marks on the floor. Do not use red resin paper on the slab.

The slab should be protected from:

  • RED Chalk
  • Foam Insulation
  • Markers
  • Spray Paints
  • Crayons
  • Gas
  • Oils
  • Grease
  • Polyurethane
  • Wax Pencils
  • Primer
  • Spray Paints
  • Coffee
  • Coke
  • Paint
  • Lumber, Saw Dust, Framing Materials
  • Metallic Nails/Rust
  • Diesel
  • PVC Primers
  • Adhesives
  • Muratic Acid
  • Tape
Exposure to the above list can prevent the stain from penetrating. The framers should brace the walls to the outside to protect the concrete. The doorplates should be cut away immediately. Our services should be scheduled after sheetrock and before painting or baseboards are placed for new builds. When covering the floor, you may use builders paper with cardboard or sheets of masonite on top. Do NOT put plastic on the concrete at any time, as this interferes with the curing process of the slab.

Acid Stains

Acid Stains are chemical metallic salts that react with the lime in the concrete. The process can not be guaranteed as each slab is unique and often unpredictable. Our color charts show color reactions, but every slab is different. All mentioned elements affect the outcome of colors and stain patterns. It is important to be aware there will be variations in stains and patterns, and we will not be held liable for differences in the chemical reactions with the concrete.

Overlay Products

Overlay Products are hand applied over existing concrete. It is important to be aware this may cause material thickness variations, height variations, ridges, trowel marks, etc. The finished project may resemble that of a plastered wall or other similar textured surface.

Water Based Concrete Stain

Water Based Stain, an alternate to acid based stains, are water based and environmentally friendly. This option allows for increased color predictability and more color options than acid stain. The penetration and wear ability is comparable to acid stain and can be applied on interior or exterior.

Metallic Epoxy

Metallic Epoxy is a popular alternative to Concrete Stains. The metallic look creates a three dimensional feel and can contain a variety of colors. These floors are typically top coated and will last a long time with minimal maintenance.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped Concrete is patterned, textured concrete made to resemble brick, flagstone, slate, stones, wood, tile, etc. Stamped Concrete is commonly used for sidewalks, driveways, patios, pool decks, or interior flooring. The stamped look is achieved by stamping the concrete after pouring and before it begins to harden. The longevity on average of our decorative stamped concrete is 25 years or more when properly installed and maintained.

Polished Concrete

Polished Concrete is a multi-step process where a floor is ground and polished with a machine similar to sanding wood . Polished Floors are sleek, shiny and easy to maintain. These beautiful floors are ground to a high-gloss finish, never requiring wax or coatings.

The customer should be aware that a degree of inconsistencies and defects will be present in the final product. Stained and sealed concrete floors are applied by trained artisans, and each floor is unique. Variations in texture, color, sealer, etc are to be expected.

Floor Maintenance

Floor Maintenance is the sole responsibility for the home owner. We suggest the application of wax as a sacrificial barrier. For cleaning, use mild detergents and common kitchen floor cleansers. Avoid acidic cleaners, orange concentrated cleaners, or swifter type mops. Resealing in the high traffic areas maybe necessary with acid stain.
